I was waiting for the train several weeks ago and I knew I really hated a conversation at that time, I was having a tough day and all I needed was a quiet place to cool down. I noticed the man who sat behind me had his eyes filled with endless sorrow, and something inside me pushed me to go over and talk to him, something strong that was hard to suppress.

I was struggling to make up my mind, if I were him what would I want others to do? Look at me with sympathy in their eyes without any tangible action? About ten minutes later I decided to do something, to listen to this inner voice of mine. I got my bag and went over to him.

He was indeed suffering from something and from his response I figured he was really going through some hard times. I listened to him and I nodded, I was put in a place to console a hurt heart, and I thought I did a great job comforting him.

He did not tell me exactly what had happened and I did not ask, what he really wanted was to get what was in his mind out and I happened to be there. Half an hour later he seemed relieved and we got on our trains, headed for different destinations, I waved goodbye and he gave me a big, warm smile.

I never expected to hear from him, I did not even know his name, and actually he did not mention his name in our conversation, time was limited then. Retailers plan Web coupon strategy for holiday

Hot Uggs defy cooled-off economy

CHICAGO — It was lunchtime on a recent weekday, and Chicago’s Michigan Avenue Nordstrom store was grimly recession-quiet — except for one spot: the Ugg section of the shoe department.

There, it was frenzied. Women filled every seat, pulling on and off the warm, iconic sheepskin boots; stacks of giant Ugg boxes were scattered about.

Having grown sick of frozen toes, I bought a pair too. I love them. My now-warm toes love them too.

How did Decker Outdoor Corp., the California-based company that makes Uggs, do it? Somehow, Decker, which is celebrating the brand’s 30th anniversary this year, managed the triple Lutz of branding: becoming a fad that doesn’t fade in the inevitable backlash.

Five years ago, it seemed every issue of People magazine had photos of Pamela Anderson, Kate Hudson, Liv Tyler, Brooke Shields, Sienna Miller, Jennifer Aniston or any other celeb sporting a pair of the boots. They were at Sundance in the snow, in New York behind a stroller, in L.A. on the set of a movie.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore a custom-made pair of ruby red ones in “Sex and The City.” Oprah put them on her favorite things list in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2007.

You would think such overexposure would kill Uggs, and for a while, fashionable people did groan when the name was mentioned. But somehow, Uggs have made the transition from trendy to wardrobe staple.

Take a look at the blog I Got Ugg boots (www.uggonsale.co.uk), and you’ll find scores of recent photos of the famous and not-so-famous wearing the boots, years after they were a hit. This month alone, I Got Uggs posted photos of Ashley Tisdale, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne, Lily Allen, Beyoncé, Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda, Isla Fisher and daughter Olive, Kristin Davis, and Kate Hudson all wearing Uggs, years after they were a hit.

“We hate the word ‘trendy,’ ” said Kristen Tomason, brand spokeswoman. “We would want to stay away from that word.”

Mohamed Ibrahim, who now makes more cash on his I Got Uggs blog than he does as a New York City schoolteacher, offered some insight on the boots’ staying power.

“It’s the way they look,” Ibrahim said. “They have this special appeal.”

And let’s not forget my now-warm toes.

So the trend has become a staple — and a recession-proof one at that, Tomason said.

“You have to stay warm,” she said, adding that sales are not down despite the bad economy. “It is going to snow regardless.”

There are very few fashion debates more contentious than whether it is ok to wear Ugg boots. You either love em or hate em. Years ago I got the very tall side-zippered version that are slimmer through the leg. Being tall helps when wearing Uggs because there is no doubt that they have a rather large profile and are bulky.

I can’t tell you how many articles I have read proclaiming that Uggs are over and would never be worn by anyone with a shred of fashion sense. And yet, I continue to see them on the street being worn by girls who clearly have style, and celebrities wear them all over LA.

I gave my mom and dad each a pair years ago when they were first claimed by Oprah as one of her favorite things. They still thank me because few things rival Uggs in terms of comfort, except maybe Crocs – and that’s a whole separate topic, isn’t it?

I’ll cop to loving my Ugg boots. My name is Laurin. It’s 55 degrees in Florida and I’m wearing my Uggs right now.

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has long been a fan, but now teen sensation Miley Cyrus has joined the parade.

Even Sarah Jessica Parker, whose character in Sex & the City was known for her love of Manolo Blahniks, has cast off the sexy heels in favour of the supersoft boot.

Angelina Jolie, Sienna Miller and Leonardo DiCaprio have also been wearing them.

Owner of Skinny’s sheepskin stores Bruce Harlow has been supplying the woolly footwear since the mid-1970s. “I think I’m just about the only one in Queensland who’s still making them,” he said.

Skinny’s stores stock about 45 styles in 10 colours.

And, if he doesn’t have it in stock, Harlow isn’t afraid to buck convention to give customers what they want.

“I’ve made a lot of freaky boots for people. I made ones that went right up to the crotch,” he said.

“It took a lot of skin and they had zips in them but that was what she wanted.”

Harlow has even replaced soles and inner ugg boots sale he made 20 years ago.

“I can’t tell you how many times people have come into the shop and they’ve got their boots all taped up,” he said.

“They do anything to keep them together for as long as possible.”

Shopper Alice Dykes, 17, from Benowa on the Gold Coast said she would seriously consider getting a pair after trying them in Skinny’s Myer Centre store this week.
